At BYFREY, our formulations are guided by our Biomimetic Mildness System™, which translates skin biology into formulation standards. Our products mimic, support, and respect how the skin is built and naturally functions.

THE SKIN AS OUR REFERENCE SYSTEM

BYFREY stands for biomimetic care, meaning our products follow the logic of the skin. As skin changes throughout life, from early development to adulthood and through different environments, we formulate around its biology. We use ingredients that the skin recognises and that support its natural functions, while respecting its environment with a focus on the skin barrier and microbiome.

THE BIOMIMETIC MILDNESS SYSTEM™

Our system is based on three principles:

1. MIMIC

We use ingredients that mirror the skin’s own structural components.
For example, skin-identical lipids such as ceramides help replenish the natural skin barrier, while skin-identical humectants such as sodium PCA support the skin's natural moisture balance.

2. SUPPORT

We select ingredients that support the skin’s natural functions.
For example, humectants such as glycerin help the skin attract and retain moisture, while panthenol supports the skin's natural barrier renewal.

3. RESPECT

We formulate to respect the skin's microbiome and natural balance. This includes using microbiome-supporting ingredients such as inulin, formulating at skin-friendly pH levels, and avoiding ingredients that may disrupt the skin.

THE INGREDIENTS WE USE AND AVOID

We formulate according to our Biomimetic Mildness System™ (BMS) by mimicking, supporting and respecting the skin. We carefully select every ingredient and avoid those that do not align with our BMS principles.

This includes ingredients that may unnecessarily disrupt the skin or increase the risk of irritation or sensitisation, such as:

  • Harsh cleansers (e.g. SLS, SLES)
  • Drying alcohols (e.g. Alcohol Denat.)
  • Essential oils & highly aromatic botanicals (e.g. lavender oil, peppermint oil, citrus oils)
  • Food proteins (e.g. wheat protein, oat protein, nut proteins, soy protein)
  • Common allergenic fragrance ingredients (e.g. Limonene, Linalool, Citral, Geraniol)
  • Selected additives we choose not to use (e.g. PEGs, silicones, parabens, phthalates, BHT, colourants)
